The Wisconsin State Fairtastic Poster Art Competition is the first annual poster competition for 2014 and is a way to celebrate and engage local and statewide artisan talent. The Grand Champion piece will be displayed during the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair, presented by U.S. Cellular, July 31 – August 10.
To submit art into the competition, entrants had to submit a first draft sketch of their entry featuring the “Wisconsin State Fair experience.” The concept was open to interpretation, but could include a showcase of rides and games, a specific activity or place, a favorite animal, delicious food or other memorable tradition. Entrants were also be asked to submit several portfolio items that demonstrated their artistic ability, and all entries needed to be two-dimensional art.
Prizes & Recognition
A panel of five judges critiqued the 28 submissions featuring the “Wisconsin State Fair Experience” from talented artisans from throughout Wisconsin. Entrants were judged based upon a scorecard of criteria, including wide audience appeal, passion for the Fair, creativity and overall composition.
The top four works of art were selected and awarded a $400 stipend to complete a second draft. The top three finalists were:
- Christopher Maury, Milwaukee
- Larry Schultz, Milton
- James Steeno, Milwaukee
Due to the overall impressive nature of the entries, five honorable mentions were awarded for exemplary effort:
- Wendy Boehm, Madison
- Dan Gardiner, Madison
- Jason Kotecki, Madison
- Anthony Polacek, Wauwatosa
- Tara Scheuerman, Milwaukee
A second rounding of judging took place to review the second drafts and conduct personal interviews with each of the top finalists to determine the winner.
Poster and postcard recreations of the winning artwork will be available for purchase at the 2014 State Fair, as well as online before and after the Fair, while supplies last. All proceeds from poster and postcard sales will support the Wisconsin State Fair Park Foundation.
Grand Champion Artist
Larry Schultz was chosen as the Grand Champion Artist of the 2014 Wisconsin State Fairtastic Poster Art Competition, who received a $1000 cash prize upon the completion of the final artwork.
Schultz grew up in Milton, Wis., a small, rural town known for its agriculture and community, and developed a passion for art, drawing and detail as a young boy. He established himself as a Wisconsin artist early on and took particular interest in applying his love for the outdoors to the canvas. Schultz has dedicated his life to his art, teaching classes, conducting painting workshops and designing murals, and has been awarded numerous recognitions and honors.
Schultz often turns to best friend, Kid (shown) to pose for artwork or help him think of creative ideas.
